This course is designed to support parents and family members of adolescents and adults who are struggling with a mental health difficulty, and to help them cope with the profound challenges they face.The course is based on the principles of Non-Violent Resistance (NVR), an approach that enables parents and caregivers to stand firmly against destructive or self-destructive behaviours while preventing escalation and continuing to support their child.A central principle of this course is that the wellbeing of parents and family members matters just as much as the wellbeing of the person experiencing the mental health challenges. Parents and families deserve a better quality of life. In fact, we know that when the quality of life of parents improves, the chances of improvement for their child — regardless of age — also increase.The NVR approach is supported by more than 30 studies, demonstrating improvements in symptoms and functioning for the person experiencing the mental disorder, reductions in escalation, stronger parent-child relationships, and a healthier family atmosphere.<h3 id="a0651239-0249-4105-8c5c-d193eddd532c" data-toc-id="a0651239-0249-4105-8c5c-d193eddd532c" style="font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.2;">In this course you will learn:</h3>a) What NVR is and how it promotes a positive kind of authority b) How to recognise and prevent escalation between you and your adolescent or adult child. c) How to overcome isolation and build a network of support for both yourself and your child. d) How to identify and gradually reduce “damaging services” — things you feel compelled to do even though they may unintentionally maintain the problem. e) How to effectively resist violence, coercion, and exploitation. f) How to cope with suicide risk and suicidal threats, whether explicit or implied. g) How to apply the principles you will learn in the course to deal with ongoing challenges such as refusal of medical or psychological treatment and questions around alternative living arrangements.
